How To: Bodywork for your racebike!

Ten Kate Racing Products Support

Stage 1

Racing Bodywork

To transform your road bike into a racing- or trackday bike, one of the first things you need to is to replace is the street bodywork for racing bodywork.

For safety reasons, the front and rear lights usually need to be removed. This leaves empty spaces in the standard bodywork. Next to this the standard bodywork is pretty heavy and can be damaged easily. Besides that, the racing bodywork also has better aerodynamics and a better shape to increase airflow. This gives, for example, your watercooler a better cooling capacity. Last but not least, racing bodywork is using quick releases fasteners in order to remove and fit the bodywork on your bike in seconds!

So.. Many reasons to dissemble your road bodywork kit and sell it on internet!

About carbon, polyester, kevlar quality and price.

Spend just five minutes on google and you will see loads of suppliers for racing bodywork. Cheap, expensive, different materials and different shapes. Ten Kate Racing Products is using Motocarbons bodywork for many years. Let’s explain us why we choose Motocarbons.

Sports Line Bodywork Products

Like with many things, the cheapest solution is not always the smartest solution. The manufacturing of high quality bodywork is a very precise job for specialists. Motocarbons bodywork is produced by highly experienced people using high-end equipment and technologies to guarantee shape and dimensions of the different bodywork parts.

Racing bodywork needs to be lightweight, because a lighter bike gives better handling and acceleration. The bodywork also needs to be strong because it needs to stay in shape at high speeds.

Motocarbons uses different thickness glass fiber in their bodywork. To save weight there is a minimal amount of glass fiber on places where the bodywork doesn’t have to be strong. On places stiffness is needed, the glass fiber bodywork is reinforced with Kevlar.

The Motocarbons glass fiber bodywork is used most common by trackday riders and riders in domestic championship. This is mostly because the glass fiber bodywork has the best balance between reducing the weight and the cost of it.

Carbon fiber has several advantages compare to glass fiber. It has higher stiffness, higher tensile strength and lower weight. Carbon fiber is also resistant to high temperatures and has low thermal expansion.

In other words; Carbon is much stronger and lighter compare to glass fiber. Carbon was originally introduced in aerospace and shortly after this carbon was also used in racing.

Motocarbons produces carbon parts using an autoclave to remove small air bubbles and ensure a really strong and hard material. In most domestic championships the use of carbon bodywork is not allowed, because carbon and the production process is relatively expensive.

Quick Release & Fasteners

The Motocarbons bodywork is prepared to use quick release fasteners. These fasteners allow you to remove and fit the bodywork to your bike in just seconds. As racing bikes usually require more maintenance compared to street bikes, the use of quick release fasteners is indispensable to turn your road bike into a real racing bike!

There are different kinds of quick release systems on the market. Ten Kate Racing Products has some different types in their program, to offer the best solution in every situation.

Sports Line

“Metal plate” base fasteners. Reliable and easy to fit! You can buy these as a 10 piece kit or as separate parts.

We also offer the special quick-top-release fastener. This system allows to remove the top fairing by hand without the need of tools. This quick release system is used in combination with the Motoholders front fairing brackets.

Racing Line:

Use of the “spring type” fasteners. Light and strong with maximum tension. These are used by WSBK and MotoGP teams.

Racing Windscreens

A racing bike is usually equipped with a special “airflow” screen to reduce air resistance (CW) for top speeds and to protect the rider.

Depending on the regulations, you can choose to use the special “double bubble” racing screens. These screens have a different shape to protect the head and shoulders of the rider. Also important: A special airflow shape doesn’t disturb a clear visibility and and your view on the track.

Racing Seat Foam

Seat foam is used in different shapes in order to make the rider feel comfortable on his racing bike.

A different seat asks for a different shape of the seat foam in order to give maximum grip and contact to the bike. This will affect the feeling with the bike on the straight line and also in-corner.

TKRP has 2 different types of seat foam in their program:

Sports Line

Pre-shaped seat foam can be glued to the seat using bison tix glue. This seat foam is pre-shaped to the shape of the particular racing seat.

Racing Line

RaceSeats seat foam with underplate. This kind of seats are used by the professional teams in MotoGP and WSBK and are shaped to rider preferences. The seat is designed to a high ergonomic shape to guarantee performance and the best possible contact to the bike. The prices of a RaceSeat is higher compared to the Sports Line seats, but a RaceSeats can be re-used after a crash. Buy one seat and use it through the whole season!
